AKRONStranger warningAKRON: Akron police are alerting residents of a man who in recent weeks has approached children in his car, asking them their names or whether they had seen his dog.The man, described as an older white male driving a red or maroon car, has not touched any of the children, police Lt. Rick Edwards said.In the past three weeks, police said, a man has sat in his car and talked to children in the areas of Delia and Noah avenues, Schneider Park, and Dorchester Road and Afton Avenue. Twice, the man asked children their names or ages. On a third occasion, he asked a group of five children whether they had seen his lost beige dog.Police said the children all walked away from the man, who never left his car.Anyone with information is asked to call Akron police at 330-375-2490. Inc. in Akron and is active in community organizations that include the Akron Art Museum, Akron Zoo and Akron Symphony Orchestra.BARBERTONWest Nile foundBARBERTON: West Nile virus has been found in a mosquito sample collected Aug. 30 at the water tower at the north end of Barberton in the Oakwood-State streets area, said Joseph Harrison of the Barberton-Norton Mosquito Abatement District.It was the first positive sample this year in Barberton. The virus has been found in four mosquito samples in Norton and another four from Doylestown. No human cases have been reported in the three communities.The district is stepping up treatment in the affected area with extra morning sprayings in addition to already scheduled evening sprayings, Harrison said.Residents are asked to take precautions when outside. Use a mosquito repellent. Wear long clothing and try to stay indoors at dusk when mosquitoes are feeding. The hope is for each of the riders to carry a flag with a Purple Heart in the center inscribed with the name of one of the Ohioans killed.Riders will gather at the Days Inn and Suites at 4742 Brecksville Road in Richfield, then will travel to the park in Clinton.The park is seeking $25 per flag sponsorship and volunteer riders.For more information, call 330-773-2385 or email info@ovmp.org or go to www.3095ride.com.Lawyer suspendedCOLUMBUS: The Ohio Supreme Court has indefinitely suspended Cuyahoga Falls attorney Harry Wittbrod from practicing law for professional misconduct in handling legal matters for three clients.The suspension was announced Wednesday morning in Columbus by the court’s Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline.In a 7-0 decision, the court adopted the board’s findings that Wittbrod neglected legal matters entrusted to him by three clients; failed to notify them in writing that he was not covered by malpractice insurance; and failed to cooperate in the investigation of the grievances that the clients filed against him with the Akron Bar Association.Wittbrod was given credit for time served under a previous suspension, in July 2009, for prior disciplinary violations and failure to comply with state attorney registration requirements.Wittbrod was not immediately available for comment on the court’s decision.HARTVILLESecurity approvedHARTVILLE: A North Canton company will install a security system at Village Hall.Village Council approved an administration recommendation Tuesday to pay APARCO Security Systems $3,812 for equipment and installation.In other business, council authorized the administration to use a consultant to select a new electricity supplier for village-owned buildings.Savings are estimated at 17 percent, or about $13,000 a year, Councilman Thomas Hough said.Council also decided to pay half the estimated cost of installing a plaque in Memorial Park in honor of Daniel Stiles, a Uniontown police captain who was killed while directing traffic in February.Stiles had been a police officer in Hartville and served for a time as acting police chief.The Hartville Lions Club is paying the rest of the estimated $1,400 cost.NORTh cantonMan shoots himselfNORTH CANTON: North Canton police say a man barricaded himself in an apartment Wednesday afternoon and shot himself before officers could enter.The identity of the man was not released and police were unavailable to provide details.According to a news release issued by the department, police were called to 191 Applegrove St. NE about 2:20 p.m. after receiving reports that the man had barricaded himself in an apartment and was threatening suicide.Officers at the scene and 911 dispatchers by phone failed to make contact with the man, police said. The department’s special response unit, which is trained to handle negotiations, was called to the scene and officers eventually went inside the apartment. The man was found in the living room dead from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot, police said.Police and the Stark County Coroner’s Office are investigating.STARK COUNTYGas prices setCANTON: Customers of Dominion East Ohio can buy natural gas for $5.60 per 1,000 cubic feet under Stark County’s customer aggregation program, county commissioners were told Wednesday. The price will last through August.The price is $6.39 per 1,000 cubic feet for Columbia Gas customers. The price will last through July.Both prices are lower than last year’s rates.Interested residents not currently participating in the program should call supplier Interstate Gas Supply at 800-280-4474 to ask if the company is still accepting customers.In other business, commissioners signed a one-year agreement for inmate medical services at the Stark County Jail with Correctional Health Care Group. The price of more than $1.4 million will be reduced if jail capacity falls.The inmate population would be cut if a proposed 0.5 percent sales tax for criminal justice is rejected in the Nov. 8 general election.TwinsburgIndustrial fireTWINSBURG: Firefighters from nine communities battled a fire at a business in Twinsburg on Wednesday morning.The fire inside Decco Alloys, 2050 Midway Drive, was initially reported about 11:30 a.m.It took an estimated 40 firefighters to extinguish the fire at the business that recycles various metals.Smoke from the blaze prompted some Twinsburg residents to complain about the odor.No one was injured.A cause has not been determined.wadsworthWaterlines OK’dWADSWORTH: City Council has authorized the installation of new waterlines on Stratford Avenue and Sunset Boulevard.Service Director Chris Easton said the project is expected to cost $450,000.The new lines on Stratford will run from College Street to Tolbert Avenue and on Sunset, from Stratford to North Avon.A proposal for the city to provide police, fire and emergency medical dispatching services to Lodi was placed on the second of three required readings.Under the terms of the three-year agreement, Lodi would pay Wadsworth $35,000 a year for the dispatching service.
